Fiona Shoesmith has kindly submitted her family tree file (via Moh) for inclusion on the main site.

http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Family%20Trees.htm

Thank you both.

I have been looking into the Taylors/ Shoesmith at haggate house all week! I have been down to Bunlry Lib today and found what I suspected. James Shoesmith has two daughters not in the tree listed a Alice Shoesmith b. abt 1818 Marsden, Lancs and a Mary b. 1823 lancs. In the Marriages of Briercliffe 1847 Jude Shoesmith is Living at haggate House. His Sister Alice is Married to the head of the house Robert taylor. Judes father is listed as James Shoesmith. This ties in with the 1841 census and the record of Alices marriage which has James Shoesmith as her father.

From this site I have Jude Shoesmith b. 1828 living at Haggate house with Alice & Robert Taylor. James Shoesmith being his father. The listing is for his wedding to Mary Crabtree in Briercliffe.

Yet in the Shoesmith tree it has this Jude Shoesmith married to Martha Mattock (could this be his second marriage?)

I dont know! When I got the Birth Cert of Anne Taylor and had mother as Alice Shoesmith I looked at the shoesmith tree to see if she was on it and found nothing. Strange though I changed my attentions to where those I had on my tree were living and what it was like. My grandmother always told my father that most of her ancestors lived up briercliffe -her mother was born up their and that most are burried at Haggate. I looked into Haggate house which was owned by Robert Taylor Alices husband and that is when I found the connection between Alice, Jude and James Shoesmith. Jude living at Haggate House with Robert & Alice. The Marriage cert confirmed that James Shoesmith was Alices father. Still with a little doubt that there might be two James or two Judes I searched every entry in Briercliffe for James shoesmith (weaver) and came up with just the one at pig hole mill. So it left no doubt atall. HAving seen your tree and Jude married to someone else I wondered (and posted on this page) did he marry twice! the by chance Ancestry suggested with its leaves ( I dont know if your familiar with its leaves!!) that my Jude married a Martha (the one in your tree) I clicked to check and found that his father was Thomas Shoesmith and not the James Shoesmith.

Steven
Ps Im now adding the ancestors of James Shoesmith to my tree from yours. Im impressed though on how youve managed to go back so far. It must have been like finding needles in haystacks. My surname is Cooper from my grandads side and yet I have not managed to go back as far a you have.

I assume when you refer to 'my tree', you mean one of those on the site...on this page http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Family%20Trees.htm

I think it is probably the tree belonging to Moh, she is a member of the forum if you wish to send her a PM though she only pops in very occasionally.

These are all of the marriages for a Jude Shoesmith from 1837 to 1905 on the LancsBMD site http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Ive seen the two. The Jude in the tree has James as father. And so that meant that Martha could not be the marriage she wanted as his father was a thomas

This gets very curious.
The Jude married to Martha Mattock was born c.1820
1851 Primet Bridge (Colne)
Jude 30 b. Marsden; Martha wife, 33 b. Harden, Yorks; John 5 b. Trawden
1861 Primet Bridge
Jude 42; Martha 42; John 16; - Wm. Bannister b. Trawden 24; Sarah Mattock, sister-in-law, 35 b Thornton, Yorkshire.
1871 Primrose Hill, Gt. Marsden
Jude 52 widower; John 26, Mary, Daughter-in-law 26, B. Trawden; Jude 4 b. Gt. Marsden; Betty 3 b. Gt. Marsden.

Jude, son of James b. c 1828
1841 James, Sarah, James 19, John 15, Jude 13, William 10, Robert 10, Abraham 5, Giles 2.

1851 Haggate
Jude 22; b. Marsden; Martha* 22, B. Briercliffe;
1861 Haggate
Jude 32; Martha 32; Mary 9, B. Briercliffe; Leah 1 b. Briercliffe.
1871 Royd St. Burnley.
Jude 42; Martha 42; Mary 17; Leah 11; Sarah Ellen 9, Briercliffe; Zilpah 7; Arthur 5; Ernest Willie 1 b. Burnley.

So obviously the Jude b. 1821 is the one that married Martha Mattock - so who is the Martha Jude 1828 married? :?:

A Betty Shoesmith died age 21 in 1847 (Freebmd) is it possible Jude married Mary Crabtree in same year - as his second wife?
Which Thomas is the father of Jude & Alice?

According to the records for St James that I transcribed and have here on the site - http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Chu ... ecords.htm - Jude who married Mary Crabtree was a bachelor and the son of James Shoesmith.

I do advise that records are checked at source as I cannot guarantee that I did not make mistakes when transcribing.

I cannot find a Jude & Mary in any of the census years - have you seen them? There are no deaths for them recorded between 1847 & 1861.
