Letters From The Front

The Last Of A Burnley Soldier

Private S. Heys, 2nd Cheshire Regiment, writing to his brother-in-law, Mr. R. H. Dearden, of Harle Syke, from Karee Siding, on the 2nd April, says:-"A man of the name of Birtwistle, from Burnley, has been killed at the battle of Karree. I went to his funeral, poor fellow. He was riddled. It's a lucky thing indeed there wasn't some hundreds killed. It's hard to say how we are going on yet, but General Tucker told us we were fighting some of the very best shooting men Kruger had, and he congratulated us on our small casualties considering the open ground we had to traverse. When I wrote last I thought I might be soon on my way home, but I am beginning to think we have a lot to do yet. To this I say, let's get at them and finish them. They won't stick it, and they have some grand positions, whichlook impossible to take, yet they are off when you get close to them. The Boers are using the dumdum bullets, and I hope we shall give them the steel in our next battle."
