Death Of An Old Inhabitant

We have to announce the death of Mr. Jas. Greenwood, cotton manufacturer, of Extwistle Mill, which took place on Saturday last. Mr. Greenwood was born at Todmorden in the year 1803, and was the son of Mr. Samuel Greenwood, or "Sam o'Kebs." Sam was the descendant of a long line of ancestors, who lived at the Keb Cote Inn, in the township of Stansfield. This old hostelry had been in the family for many generations. Young Jim o'Kebs, the patronymic he was est known by in his native district, was brought up a hand loom weaver; he afterwards became a power loom weaver under Fielding's at Waterside, after which he came to Burnley, about 60 years ago, and was a tackler at Messrs. Dean & Laws, Lane Bridge, from whence he became a tenant of Extwistle Mill, some 40 years ago. In his early days he was a staunch disciple of Robert Owen, whose opinions on socialism he held to the last. He was also a great admirer of sacred music, and composed several anthems which still retain their position in the musical world. The funeral took place at Briercliffe Church, on Wednesday last.

Late Mrs. B. Greenwood.- The death took place last Sunday of Mrs. Betty Greenwood, of 57, Duke-street, Briercliffe, at the age of 77 years. Mrs. Greenwood was a member of an old Briercliffe family, and was highly esteemed in the village. She is suvived by a grown-up family.

Death of Former Resident

The death took place last Sunday, at his home at Birkdale, of Mr. William Greenwood, who was 64 years of age. When living at Briercliffe he worked at the quarry, and at Birkdale he was on the staff of the gas works. He was well-known by the older generation at Briercliffe, being a member of an old local family. He is survived by a wife and three married children. The funeral was at Southport Cemetery last Wednesday.
