The Wounded Soldiers At Primrose Bank
Provision of Comforts and Entertainments

On the recommendation of the Infirmary Committee of the Burnley Board of Guardians, it was arranged on Thursday that the House Committee should be the committee (with power to add other guardians who may express a desire to serve thereon) for taking charge of entertainments, provision of comforts, &c., for the wounded soldiers at Primrose Bank Military Hospital (lately the Workhouse Infirmary). It is proposed to provide one or two entertainments weekly at the hospital, and it is suggested that societies, choirs, or individuals who are prepared to offer their services voluntarily in any capacity should communicate with Mr. A. F. sutcliffe (who has been appointed secretary of the committee), at 5, Nicholas-street.
The following is a list of things sent this week to Miss Nugent, the matron of the hospital, for the wounded soldiers at Primrose Bank:- Parcel of magazines and flowers, 2lbs. of tobacco and 1,000 cigarettes, Mrs. Anforth, 284, Barden-lane; 100 cigarettes, Miss Roberts, Nelson; one parcel magazines and ten books, Mr. Hargreaves, Padiham; two canvas chairs and tomoatoes, Mr. J. Stansfield, Osborne Grove, Burnley; eight books, Mrs. Hargreaves, Padiham; ten books, Miss Lancaster, Carlton-terrace, Burnley; two canvas chairs, Dr. T.F. Edmondson; nine books, Mrs. Hargreaves, Padiham; five magazines and six books, Miss Carrie, Nelson; flowers, Miss Ormerod, Burnley; books and magazines, Miss Pollard, Murray-street, Burnley; free passes to football match (coffee &c., provided, rev. T. Williams), hon. secretary, football ground; free entrance to two pictue houses, through kindness of Rev, T, Williams; polophone and records, Mr. P.H. Altham, Reedley House, Burnley; vegetables, per Sister Florence, from Harvest Festival, Brooklands-road Chapel; two parcels of books and 1lb. wool, Miss Dean, 13, Powell-street, burnley; books, Mr. W. Taylor, Padiham; parcel of books, Mrs. Noble, Higher Trapp, simonstone; parcel of books and offer of two billiard tables, Mr. Hargreaves, Mill-street, Padiham; ten comfort bags, Miss riley, Hawks House, Brierfield; magazines, "Sketch," and "Punch," Miss Kathleen Kay, Clifton House, Burnley; some soldiers taken to Whalley by Miss Emmeett (by motor).
Mr. swift, the Master of the Workhouse has also received the following gifts for the wounded soldiers:- From St Peter's congregation, vegetables and cigarettes; Hollingreave Chapel (per Rev. Mr. Berry), cigarettes and walking sticks; Mr. Fred Hargreaves, "The Gables," cigarettes; Rev. Canon Mills, Padiham, flowers and fruit; Mr. L. Thornber, books, periodicals, and two daily papers, for a long period; Mr. Bell, Hazel Grove, useful gifts; Mr. W. Hartley, Manchester-road, 10s.; Mr. Edmondson, "Beechwood," deck chairs; Lanehead Cottage Garden and Allotment Association, per Mr. Jolly, cigarettes; Burnley and District Angling Association, cigarettes; Mr. Percy Brotherton, fruit and cigarettes; Mr. A. Sutcliffe, cigarettes.
