No idea.
I haven't looked into him prior to the marriage and the 1911 census. Not sure if I will (or need to?)

No, I agree I don't really think you need to. .......could be a nightmare of a name.

Just a useless bit of info------Chrenion
In 1901 census there were only 7 of that name, all in the same family, and they were in Staffordshire. In 1861 there were 5, all in the same family and again in Staffordshire. The head in 1861 came from Ireland. I couldn't see any others in the other censuses.

Thanks Gloria.
I've spoken to Lyndon's dad about it and he has no knowledge of the name. Always knew the aunt as Saunders and had always assumed that the daughter had been a Saunders prior to her marrying a Crosson.

Just wish I could find Ruth Cooper in 1901 now! I know she is living because she is around in 1911. Think it might be on the back burner until I rejoin Ancestry. Their search really is the most user-friendly around even if they don't reward loyalty,

She was born Ruth Ford. She maried Stephen Cooper who died sometime before 1891 (I have a reference). This is the 1881 and 1891 for her

1881
RG11/2704 folio 67 pg32
May Bank
Stephen Cooper, Head, M, 39, Potter, b.Red Street
Ruth, Wife, M, 37, b.Longton
Sarah Jane, Dau, 16, Transferer, b.Burslem
William Hy, Son, 12, Scholar b.Burslem
Elizabeth, Dau, 10, Scholar, b.Wolstanton
Frederick, Son, 6, Scholar, b.Wolstanton
Mary Ellen, Dau, 4, b.Wolstanton
Annie, Dau, 3, b.Wolstanton
Alice Maud, Dau, 1, b.Wolstanton

1891
RG12/2145 folio 27 pg 14
Mastyn House, Blythe Bridge
Cook for Thomas Forrester & family.
Ruth Cooper Serv W 47 Cook (domestic) b.Longton

She has a daughter (and other children but I think this is the one that is probably of interest), Alice Maud who is sometimes Alice and sometimes Maud. This is the 1891 for Alice Maud...and some of her siblings.

RG12/2153 folio 8 pg 9
New St Wolstanton
William Hy, Head, S, 22, Coal miner b.Wolstanton
Elizabeth, Sister, 20, Potters transferrer, b.Wolstanton
Frederick, Brother, 18, Brickyard labourer, b.Wolstanton
Ellen, Sister, 16, Potters transferer Assist b.Wolstanton
Annie, Sister, 14, Potters transferer Assist b.Wolstanton
Maud, Sister, 12, Scholar b.Wolstanton

Bit of background as Staffordshire is unfamiliar to you - May Bank and Red Street both come under Wolstanton which is on the outskirts of Newcastle under Lyme. Longton, where Ruth was born, is in Stoke on Trent and not that far from Blythe Bridge - where she is in 1891.

In 1911, Ruth is living with Alice Maud (this time known as Maud), in Stoke.
So, Ruth is still a Cooper - hasn't remarried - and could be anywhere between Kidsgrove and the Staffordshire Moorlands! I suspect she will be with Maud as Maud does not marry until 1913.

The Mary Ellen in 1881 (&Ellen in 1891) is the ancestor of my mother in law and married Frederick William Cyples in 1902. In 1901 she can be found
RG13/2585 folio 123 pg 17
Park Avenue, Wolstanton
Barker George E G 34 Head Earthenware Manufacturer Longton, Staffordshire
Barker Minnie 33 Wife Longton, Staffordshire
Barker George E J 12 Son Normacott, Staffordshire
Barker Claude H 5 Son Normacott, Staffordshire
Barker Arthur C 3 Son Wolstanton, Staffordshire
Cooper Mary E 23 Servant Coak Domestic Wolstanton, Staffordshire

Can't find either Ruth Cooper or her daughter Alice Maud. My bet is that it has been mistranscribed. I've tried Ruth born Longton, Cooper born Longton and found nothing. Tried variations on Alice Maud but nothing comes up that I can see. Sorreeeee.
Just found this which may need a bit of looking at
Cooper John 67 Head Care Taker Of Officer Hanley, Staffordshire 25 Glibe Street, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire RG13/2608/~F9 CD4 R_2608.pdf p.15
Cooper Lucy 56 Wife Potters Paintress Earth Longton, Staffordshire 25 Glibe Street, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire RG13/2608/~F9 CD4 R_2608.pdf p.15
Cooper Alice M 20 Daughter Wotstantan, Staffordshire 25 Glibe Street, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire RG13/2608/~F9 CD4 R_2608.pdf p.15

"Lucy" was born Longton, and would be about the right age. Alice M is the right age and born in the right place. Seems a bit coincidental. Pity we haven't a sub to Ancestry as we could look for the marriage of a John Cooper to a Lucy-----I would hope we wouldn't find one.

Thanks! :D
I think that is them Gloria though why Ruth should be listed as Lucy is a mystery unless it's a pet name that john used? If you look at the image, it's actually Lucy who is the caretaker - same occupation as Ruth in 1911 and it's also the same address as in 1911 though it is actually Glebe and not Glibe....not that you would have known either of those details!
John has appeared before so I'm guessing he is perhaps a relation to Ruths deceased husband as he was lodging with him (I assume it is the same John) in 1861 though there is a small age difference. Mind you....when a name is comepletely different, what's a couple of years out on an age!

Thanks again Gloria, another one solved. What else do I have

I wonder if John Cooper told the enumerator that her name was Ruthie....with a bit of a speech impedement, it could....at a push, sound like Lucy.

(Bet you're trying this now  )

Forgive me for being confused (regular state of affairs :( ) but if I understand aright, we're looking for Ruth Cooper, born Longton, on the 1901 census. The 'Lucy' details show her as wife of John Cooper.
However, wasn't Ruth's husband called Steven and wasn't he already dead by 1891?

On a completely different topic, Family Tree Maker wouldn't work on my new laptop & notebook (windows7). So my daughter bought me the latest version for Christmas - complete with 6 months free subscription to Ancestry. It had got to the stage where I cancelled it through infrequent use. But I didn't half miss it.

Aren't you a lucky bunny Maureen. I miss Ancestry even though I could go ages without going on it.

Re Ruth Cooper---There seems to be quite a few coincidences with the census I found, that I thought it was worth looking at. As Mel says----same address, same occupation and a John was lodging with them in the past.

We got back from France yesterday so I popped up to see mother-in-law last night and told her about this. She isn't very familiar with Ruth Cooper....seems I haven't shared all of my findings with her yet  but she was a little dubious about the name. I explained about the abode and occupation and she was a little more convinced but I do need to share the rest of what I have with her. I thought I had but obviously not!
