Just thought I'd mention a recent book with Burnley connections.
Somewhere in France: A Tommy's Guide to Life on the Western Front
by William and Geoffrey Whittaker.

William was the son of Thomas Whittaker and Isabella Varley,of 294 Colne Road, Burnley, and later of 6 Ford Street.

Geoffrey is one of two sons of William, and it was only on the death of his elder brother John, that he discovered the family collection of letters sent home from the Western Front to Thomas and Isabella - all 280 or so!

Geoffrey has compiled the above book from the contents of the letters, primarily into subject order, such as Food, Aerial Warfare, Tobacco and Alcohol, etc. and one particularly on Comrades, including John Kippax and Harry Preston.

After WW1, William married Nellie May Crabtree at Worsthorne, and became a bank manager. In WW2, living in Barnoldswick, he was Bank Manager, and Captain of the Home Guard (sounds familiar Pike!)

The book is available from Amberley publications or via Amazon.

Martin Whittaker
