One of the receipes from an old book of my Grandad's, he was a big believer in natural medicine, he always used herbs and herbal remedies for himself and his family, it must have worked because he was 83 when he died and my Gran was 94. I remember my Gran taking a spoonful of herbs right up to the end. To prevent wrinkles; Mix into a paste equal parts of alum, starch, tannin, arnica, glycerine and honey. Apply a small quantity to the face on retiring. Wash in warm rain-water next morning, using unscented white curd soap. Stephanie. |

You probably had to save rain water in a bottle or summat, then heat it up until it was just warm. Stephanie. |

Rain water was valued in the past because it was softer than mains water (in hard water districts) and quite often purer than well water. Many houses built up to the early years of the 20th Century had tanks for storing rain water from the gutters, and a separate cold tap in the scullery for rain water to do the washing with. Our big Victorian house (which was unfashionable and had come down a long way in the world when we bought it!) had a small room, about 6 feet square, on the top floor, which originally had been lead-lined to store rainwater. That was in Cheltenham where the water from the Cotswolds is very hard. Charon |
