Felony

John Sutcliffe, a servant in the employ of Joseph Rushton, a rag dealer, in Colne, was on Wednesday charged by his master with stealing a pack sheet, on the 20th ult., from the warehouse. Rushton's wife stated that the prisoner came into the house with the sheet over his arm, but did not say anything to him, nor charge him with the theft. The prisoner worked sometimes indoors, and at others went gathering rags. During the past winter Rushton had lent him a sheet to throw over his shoulders when out, and the present pack sheet seems to have been taken for that purpose. The prisoner, however, sold the sheet to Henry Lee, at Bradley Bar, for 3 1/2d. - The Bench could not convict him for stealing, as he had probably no such intentions at the time of coming into possession of it, but held that he knew he must be doing wrong in selling it. They discharged him.
