David, I just tried Live Search Maps and you're right, it is good. It worked well for some Canadian addresses I tried, too.

A lot of my family lived in the Abel Street area at one time - Granville St., Old Hall St., Holbeck St., and worked in the mills on Elm St. Do you know when those houses were built?

Joan

I think there must be differences in those location finder websites...As I look my own address... Richards Landing, Ontario, Canada...I find there are qualitative differences between Google Earth (which is a big program requiring downloading), Google Maps (directly from the Google home page), and maps.live.com. For me, the simplest, fastest and clearest by far is the Maps option from the Google home page. Anyone know why this is the case??
Can you give me the location address for Extwhistle Hall? I have had fun googling Briercliffe and finding family homes and other familiar addresses...and they're just where I left them, forty-five years ago!!

The nearest post code I can give you is for Houghtons Farm which is slightly to the left of Extwistle Hall. That is BB10 3PW.

Hi Joan
I dont know for sure when they were built off the top of my head but I would guess around the early to middle part of the 19th century. Say 1830-1850. Lots of terraced type housing was built around that time for the population explosion caused by the cotton industry in Burnley during that period.I am sure if you need an accurate date then I could find out more for you with a little research.

David, 1830-1850 is close enough, thank you. Some of my people were there in the 1871 census, when the housing would then be fairly new.

Hi

I think the street you mean is Tentre St. My gt grandparents lived on Tentre St in the early 1900s.

Yes Sue it was Tentre Street but it was demolished quite a few years ago.
