That was the blessing of childhood, you had no fear of anything, you were invincible there were no consequences, and if there were you were willing to risk it, hanging upside down from a tree or a lamppost were things that had to be done, now with age and experience we know the consequences and we arnt willing to risk it anymore, besides I'd not even be able to climb to the first branch now even if I wanted to As the saying goes 'the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak'.

I was'nt a girly girl, did'nt play with dolls, none of my girlfriends did, we preferred getting mucky, and playing with gas tar, lovely stuff when it was soft, used to get in real bother off me Mum for getting it on me clothes or in me hair.

Climbing trees was one of my favourite activites. We lived near the edge of town and just up the lane there were trees galore. And, Stephanie, I too used to go upside down against a wall, and walk crab, with dress tucked in knickers.

Our pastimes were seasonal as well; looking for the first mayflowers and bluebells in spring, later on the buttercups and making daisy chains. Then in autumn picking blackberries, and in winter sliding on any small patch of ice we could find. Our food was whatever was in season as well. We lived much more seasonally than today.

I really feel sorry for todays kids. They don't get half the freedom that I enjoyed and I bet my freedom was only half of what many of you would have had.

If the weather was bad, we woudl make dens in the trees and shelter there.

After dark, or if we had to stay in, we would play Monopoly or Scrabble and games like that. I think my niece would struggle with games like this despite walking away with 11 GCSE's! Perhaps struggle is the wrong word, she does not like to play/do anything that makes her think.
