Hello there. I have recently become interested in my ancestors from my father's side and found your amazing website the other day. Thanks to Moh who posted the Shoesmith family tree dating back from 1580 where I was able to trace my ancestors. My grandad was Walter Thornber Shoesmith b1885 and my dad Walter Albert Shoesmith b 1921 d 2007.

Today would have been my father's 88th birthday and I have been looking at old photographs of his family and have found many which I will try and scan and send to you.

Anyway, back to the original subject-my great grandparents were ALFRED( b 1862) and HANNAH SHOESMITH who lived at

Meadow Cottages, Facit and 48 Stodden Cottages, Facit.

My great great grandparents were ROBERT (b1831) and ELIZABETH SHOESMITH

:D

Thanks Mel. I'm having so much fun with this great website. Just seen photos of the Shoesmith gravestones in Haggate churchyard. I think I'm going to have to visit the area. Haven't been to the area since the 1970s as a child when I used to visit my grandad who lived in Humphrey Street, Brierfield.

Facit is in Littleborough . Apparently my great grandad moved there to be a railway porter and his children moved back to Brierfield to work in the mills. My grandad and grandma worked in Hargreaves mill and lived at 8 Ross Street, Brierfield.

I have found a lovely photo today of my dad playing on a go-cart. He looks about 10 years old and is with his cousin Clifford Jackson. I went onto Google maps to look at Ross Street and I couldn't believe it, as it was exactly the same view of the street as on the photo with what looks like a mill at the top of the street.

Regards

Caroline

Hello Caroline, I too have over the past 3 months been building my family tree and discovered that your great great grandfather Robert Shoesmith (b1831) is my Great Great Great granduncle and his brother James Shoesmith (1822-1898) is my Great Great Great Grandfather!! but the Shoesmith family tree is huge. I have Strangely enough been to Haggate cemetery today and if you go in the main gate the 1st and 3rd ones on your right are Shoesmith graves, the place is quite big and will take a while to walk round. My great grandmother Sophia nutter was also from Briercliffe and there are a lot of Nutter family graves too. Claret.
