Hi Christine M.

John Foster b. 1814 is my Great Great Grandfather, from my findings Halstead was his younger brother.

Below is what I have found out to date.
Jeremiah Foster b. between 1792 and 1796 Married Mary Halstead on Oct 27 1803 at St Peters Church Burnley.

From the Haggate Baptist Church Birth Records they had 8 children.
William b.18Mar 1804,
John b. 02Jun 1806 (he must have died while a baby)
Ellin 06Apr 1808
Peggy b. 17Aug 1810
James b. 02Sept 1812
John b. 22Oct 1814
Halstead b. 15Apr 1818
Jeremiah b. 16Nov 1822
You can see all these names on the Church Records on this Web Site.

I also found that Jeremiah married a second time to Sarah Dearden in Nov 1832 at St Peters Church. She however must have died before 1841 because she is not shown in that Census.
I would suggest that your Jeremiah birth date of 1783 could be 1793.

HI Jack,
From which of John's children are you descended?
John was my 3x great grandfather.
Thanks
Alison

Hi Alison

In answer to your Question.
I am descended from Mary Foster b.1837 the oldest of John’s Children.
Mary married Henry Hirst b.1834. He had lived at Banks farm Lane Bottom.
They had ten Children
1. Albert 1860, he died in infancy,
2. Foster 1861 he went to America in 1888, married an English girl, Jane, they had three children.
3. Frank 1863, married Martha Ann, they had four children
4. Jane 1865, she married Edmund Spencer and they went to America in 1892, no children
5. Albert 1869 unmarried,
6. Eva 1870 unmarried,
7. James 1873, married Elizabeth, they had four children. They went to Australia in the 1920s
8. John Hirst 1875, he is my Grandfather, he married Isabella Annie Biddle, they had five children.
9. Edmund 1878 he married Margery Hargreaves, he went to America with five children and with Margery pregnant, Edmund emigrated in 1911, Margery in 1912.
10. Margaret Ann 1879 she died in 1880, six months old.

I see that you have half these names on your Family Tree.

John Foster would be my 2x great grandfather.

Best wishes

Jack

 I've got a little bogged down with all the names but, my great aunt Sarah(Cissie) Eastwood married a Willie Foster. Their D.O.B. would be around 1875, their only child was Rhoda, they lived in Harle Syke and moved to Brierfield around 1920 and Rhoda married about that time, they all moved to Blackpool and the present decendants say that gt. grandfather Willie was part of Fosters Mill. Any help to you or have I confused you as much as I have confused myself?

Hi Hannah,

I am very pleased to hear from you. This all fits in with my information. I have been hoping that one of the other Foster Brothers had some descendants.
I have information from Tom Foster (son of Willie who carried on the mill after his father Thomas Foster's, who was one of the Brothers, death) that a couple of the brothers went to Blackpool after leaving the mill and that they had daughters who probably married and had family.
If you look at my Foster family tree, which is on this site, you will find William Foster b 1876 marrying a Sarah (thanks for giving me her maiden name) and having a daughter called Rhoda in 1898.
I would be very grateful if you could put me in touch with the descendants. I will write to you privately with my email address.

Thanks and kind regards
Alison

Hi Alison, having a bit of trouble with your email address so this page will be quicker.
Here is what I know and let me know where my gt.aunt's husband fits in.
At the moment all I can tell you is that Sarah Eastwood m. Willie Foster and had one daughter Rhoda, the address on 1901 census is 5 Duke St, Harle Syke.
In 1915 their daughter married in a joint ceremony with Sarah's youngest sister Florence, who was then living with the family as the parents had died when she was in her early teens. They lived at this stage at the top of Junction St, Brierfield.
I am not sure when they migrated to Blackpool ( I will have to get back to you on that)
Rhoda had one daughter Doreen, who in turn had three daughters, two of whom are still around and living in Blackpool.
Hope this fills in a gap for you, everyone on this website is very helpful, you may have noticed I have a question on about Benjamin Eastwood, he is Sarah's nephew, this tends to never end, beware!! you will be searching in your sleep/

Hannah,

Willie Foster (your great aunt's husband) was without a doubt one of the original Foster Brothers and thus a brother to my great grand father John Foster.

If you could find out whether any of the Blackpool girls are interested, I would be happy to send them the Foster Story with pictures.

Hannah,

I have just found out that Rhoda Foster married a Harold Leeming in 1915.

I cannot find the marriage of their daughter Doreen. Do you know who she married, when and where?

Yes the name Leeming sounds familiar, but not sure who the daughter married. Will let them know that you want to make contact, but not sure what they will make of the comments about the two girls?

Please don't mention the comments about the two girls - that was only Tom's impression as a teenager!

I have done a bit more searching - Doreen married a Kenneth Scott in Fylde 1Q 1936. The daughters seem to have been Patricia B 1Q 1937, Pamela b 1945 and Doreen b 1949 all in Blackpool. Does that sound right to you?

You are right about this getting addictive!

I do not currently have the documents to back this up (my parents have them) but:

Halstead Foster was my great-great-great grandfather - I don't know his wife's name but
He had a son named John Foster, who married Sarah Thornton
John & Sarah had a son named Robert Thomas Foster (born approximately 1885 but my family has a birth document for him)
Robert Thomas Foster (who died in 1928) was married to Elizabeth Brierly had one son named John Foster, who was my grandfather, born in 1913
John Foster married Dorothy Cowgill and they had three children, including my mother
The family emigrated to Canada in the 1950's and they have descendants in various parts of Canada and the US...

Hello Alison
Florence Sutcliffe born Foster was my mother`s cousin and John Foster was the brother of my grandfather
Arthur Foster. Also I remember meeting Vera in Torquay in 1941 when I was a child! Is she your grand mother?
Thomas Foster worked for ICI and was last heard of in Gerard Cross.

Patricia.

Hello Alison
John Foster was the brother of my grandfather Arthur Foster. Arthur was born in 1874 in Harle Syke and died in
Southport in 1947. He retired there in 1920, Florence was my mother`s cousin and the last time we saw her was
in Bournemouth in 1961. To my knowledge Thomas Foster was married to Margaret Ellen Shackleton who was
known as Aunty Maggie and she died in 1941, Young Tom Foster went to Manchester University and worked for
ICI, He married Faith and had two daughters.
