Hi to All. I am a new member. Very impressed by this interesting and useful website.
I am researching a family of Thorntons who lived in and around Briercliffe for at least three generations at the end of the 19th century. I am currently particularly interested in Robert and Margaret Ann Thornton who were living at 7 Duke Street in 1901.
They lived into their eighties and are buried in Haggate churchyard. Also mentioned on the gravestone is their daughter Hilda who "died in infancy". I have looked at varous sources of BMD indexes online and I can't find any record of her. I have only found one reference of her being born and dying in 1900 but not on any official register. Maybe this means she died before they could register her? I am planning a visit to Burnley library on Saturday to look at the church records and see what I can find out.
If anyone else is interested in the Thorntons I would love to hear from you but I notice that of all the names mentioned on the forum Thornton isn't one of them!
Thanks,
Jeanette. email cavewight@aol.com

Hi Jeanette, welcome to the site.

I think they would have had to register her even if she died before they made it to the register office. They would have probably registered both birth and death if this was the case. After 1867 (I think) it became law that a birth had to be registered.
Was she maybe a stillborn? I'm not sure what the law was on stillbirths.

Thank you all for the information. I shall keep a copy of all the names and dates provided. As I have only gone back as far as 1899 I will have to work out if there are any connections.. I suspect there probably will be.
I have looked at the church records on this site and the census informaton too. After I printed them out it was possible to make conections to most of the families but it was only really guess work without any evidence. I am awaiting a copy of Robert and Maraget's marriage certificate so I should get their fathers' names and addresses.

Thanks again,

Jeanette.

I think I may have been misled by the 1900 reference I found on one website which was possibly wrong. i have ordered a birth certificate for Hilda Thornton born and died 1904. Hopefully it will confirm her parents' names and address and the mystery will be solved...
