Gloria, I've found a Sarah Kippax (age 60) on the 1881 census at Fennymoor Foot. I don't know whether you have (or want her).

The other members of the household are her widowed daughter, Ellen Greenwood 4 Greenwood grandchildren (who appear to be Ellen's) and 2 nephews, Daniel Leaver & John Aldersley.
Sorry, it seems the Kippax & Leaver threads are getting mixed up again.

Thanks, I do know of her, but thanks again. Isn't it funny how you find one connection with a family (Leaver) and all of a sudden more crop up.

I have just asked Roger about this. He hasn't heard of Stew Head either. He did say that pre 1840's, Briercliffe covered a much larger area which included Worsthorne and Hurstwood and even further on than that. Stew Head could have been in one of these areas.
I have had a look on the 1841 census for a Thomas Laycock who was a butcher but didn't find anything.

He comes up as a farmer on 1841 at Broad Bank, Stephen Hey. I can only think that the marriage register was poorly transcribed and Stephen Hey got misread as Stew Head.
Maybe in those days it wasn't a million miles from farmer to butcher.

Roger was saying that Portia.
A butcher back then would have been more like what we know as an abbatoir. Any trade would more likely have been done from the farm and not a shop.
