I have taken this from a very interesting discussion on LFHHS Yahoo forum. It is about divorce/bigamy in the 1700/1800's and the laws relating to it.
The law allowed
Marry ex-wife's sister - 1907
Marry dead brother's widow - 1921
Marry nephews/nieces by marriage - 1931
Divorcee marry former sister/brother-in-law - 1960.
Marry mother-in-law (if own wife and father-in-law are dead) - 1986

OH's 2xg'aunt married her sister's widower in 1873. It's only in the last year or two I found out this wasn't legal at the time. Who knows whether she knew?
